Bastille was a fortress prison in Paris.

Bastille stood for the despotic power of the monarch. It signified the absolutism and monarchial form of government. Also there were revolutionary prisoners in the Bastille. People believed that there was hoard of ammunition in the Bastille .

So on 14th July, 1789, people stormed the Bastille. This marked the beginning of the French Revolution.
