The poet tried to kill the innocuous snake because his instinctive fear impelled him to do so. Generally snakes make us feel fearful and scared. When they are around our reflexive fear under the surviving instinct compels us to kill them. The author too could not suppress his fearful instincts. He tried to kill it lest in future it should kill him.
