During the  Indian Rebellion of 1857  , the rebellions  seized Delhi. Bahadur Shah Zafar because of his unbaised views on religions, was widely accepted by some Indian kings and regiments as the Emperor of India.

When the sepoys  arrived at Bahadur Shah Zafar's court,  he yielded to the demands of the sepoys who thought  they would not be able to win against the East India Company without him.

Answer:

The rebels declared Bahadur Shah Zafar as their leader because they wanted an Indian king to lead them. BAHADUR SHAH ZAFAR HAD NO SPECIAL POWERS WHEN BRITISH CAME TO RULE INDIA.SO WHEN THE SEPOYS WENT TO HIM HE WAS ALSO MOTIVATED AND FELT HAPPY THAT THE SEPOYS ARE MAKING HIM AS THE LEADER AND GIVING HIM RESPECT.
