Louis XIV convened an Assembly of Estates General in 1789 to discuss the new taxes to be imposed. In that Assembly the Third Estate represented the common people of France which included peasants, artisans, businessmen, officials and lawyers. They voiced their concerns and grievances in the Assembly. The six hundred representatives carried with them 40,000 letters of the common people. So they considered themselves to be the spokesmen of the whole nation. When they failed to get their demands fulfilled by the King, they walked out of the Convocation of Estates General. Under the leadership of Mirabeau and Abbe Sieyes the Third Estate formed a National Assembly. It drafted a new constitution to limit the powers of the King.
