Why did the Republican Isolationists refuse to ratify President Wilson’s League of Nations?
Answers
Shortly after world war I, President Wilson proposed estabishment of an international peace keeping agency called the League of Nations.
Republican Isolationists firmly believed that only the US congress had the final authority to declare war.
They believed that if US joins the League of Nations, they would be dragged into unnecessary conflicts of other countries leading to loss of life and property.
The League violated the constitution.
The main reason was that people thought that the League would bring the U.S. into wars without their opinion.
This violated the constitution where the Congress had the power to declare war.
Ironically, the US was not part of this and also the key powers of Europe were not a part of this League.
Since the US was not part of this, it failed.
