Why did the sepoys refuse to use Enfield rifles?

• Rumours spread as the newly introduced enfield rifles catridges were greased with cow and pig fat.
• The cartridge had to be bitten of before loading.
• Hindu and Muslim sepoys refused to use the catridges as cow is considered to be devotional by Hindus and pork is forbidden for Muslims
