If this refers to the Indian Mutiny during the British Raj, I think I recall reading that it related to the sealed paper cartridges having been sealed with pig grease or fat, meaning that any Moslem soldier would then believe he’d been defiled by the resulting contact with an unclean animal. Pigs are/were so seen, and I think hares and rabbits similarly because the latter are seen to eat their own faeces, which is an adaptation to getting the most nutrients from grass. (With the digestion of these animals the material needed to pass through the gut twice.)
