Answers
THE CAUSES BEHIND THE FALIURE OF THE FIRST WAR OF INDEPENDENCE IN 1857 are :- 1.) LACK OF CO-ORDINATION AMONG THE LEADERS:- As the revolt of 1857 was supposed to begin on 31 May, 1857 but the incidents at Meerut Disturbed the whole plan. No serious effort was made to relieve the siege of Delhi by Nana saheb are any other leader 2.) LACK OF EFFICIENT LEADERSHIP:- Rani Lakshmi Bai, Tantia Top and Kunwar Singh, no doubt, attained noteable victories against the British. But there activities we're confined to a narrow area and extended over a brief period. On the other hand, the British cause was very ably promoted by leaders like Lawrence, Havelock, Nicholson and Campbell. 3.) SUPERIOR EQUIPMENT AND RESOURCES OF THE BRITISH:- In the words of Dr. R.C. Majumdar,"the military equipment of the Indians was inferior to that of the English: for example, their old muzzle loaders were outraged by the newly invented breech-loaders of the English troops.". Moreover, the British had the advantage of a far-reaching telegraph system. They could pour men and materials into places were they were needed 4.) THE WAR WAS LOCALISED:- Many parts of India was not affected by the uprising at all. PUNJAB REMAINED ABSOLUTELY QUITE. INDIAN RULERS LIKE SINDHIA AND THE NIZAM OF HYDERABAD STOOD BY THE SIDE OF THE BRITISH. Even Singh, Rajsathan and Bengal remained unaffected. 5.) (the most important) NO SCHEME OF A NATIONAL STATE :- The rulers of the Indian states had no idea of national state for all India. Independence was meant only for the ruling cheifs. There was no freedom for the common people in it.
