The woman who opened the door was Mrs. Dorling. She looked at the narrator searchingly because she had not expected the narrator would return after the war to claim her mother's things back.
Mrs. Dorling did not open the door because she did not want the narrator to come inside her house and see all her mother’s belongings such as cutlery, sliver, crockery, antique things, etc. She had no intention of returning these things to her. That’s why she tried to send her away from the door. Mrs. Dorling was not happy to receive the narrator. The narrator felt bad at the cold reception. So, she went away.
