The seeds which are placed in the water starts the process of germination. The germinating seeds are used for the respiration experiments. The seeds are required to be kept moist so that there is enough amount of water for the growth and production of the new parts in the seeds.

If there is no moisture, the cells in the seeds will dry up. The cells cannot perform respiration. This will result in the decrease in the rate of respiration which will affect the results of the experiment.
