Answer:

Mahatma Gandhi could have easily sat on the Prime Minister’s saddle. Nobody would have opposed him or nobody would have grudged him. Gandhiji had all the rights to occupy that hot seat. He had fought for freeing India from British Rule in a novel way and had succeeded in gaining freedom to her. He was a towering giant and all others were Lilliputs in front of him. As regards his capability to rule, he was a qualified man and gifted with the nuances to administer a country like India. When we look back at the umpteen number of countries of the world, so many countries have been ruled by not so gifted people. Compared to them, Mahatma Gandhiji would have proved himself to be a good Prime Minister. Moreover, during those days, he was surrounded by people endowed with honesty, integrity, saintly qualities and deep patriotism. Having such people of calibre in his Cabinet, Gandhi could have had a cakewalk. Definitely he would have established a Ram Rajya in India.

Then, why did Gandhiji declined the offer to occupy that august Chair? We who are firm believers in Sanatana Dharma agree that rebirth is a certain thing. Some great Indian saint might have taken rebirth as Mahatma Gandhi in order to release our sacred Motherland from foreign yoke and also to prove to the people of the world in general and leaders in particular how potential and formidable and powerful was the tool called AHIMSA. If before India’s independence, Gandhiji would have told people that he was going to win war against mighty British empire with only one arrow i.e., AHIMSA in his quiver, people would have laughed to their hearts’ content and ridiculed him like anything. He knew his agenda very well and he was capable of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, which others were not endowed with to visualise. A look at his daily routine will prove my point that he was a saint-incarnate. His simple hand-spun two piece cloth to cover his fragile frame, peanuts and goat milk for food, daily prayers, laying emphasis on cleanliness, his razor-sharp brain, his austere lifestyle etc., goes to show that he was cast in a different mould and he was assigned the job of releasing his Motherland from incarceration and hand over the nation to others and repair to his saintly duties and obligations. He had no desire to occupy not only the post of Prime Minister of India but even if asked to become the President of this universe, he would have politely declined the offer. Such was his determination. These worldly posts and wealth are no more than dust to such mighty spiritual giants like Mahatma Gandhiji. Why we worship Gandhiji and not others gives the necessary answer to this simple question. THIS POCKET OF EARTH CALLED INDIA WHICH WAS ONCE A THYAGA BHOOMI, HAS, UNFORTUNATELY, GOT CONVERTED INTO A BHOGA BHOOMI. VERY SAD.

The following THE RECIPE, written by Shri T.P.KAILASAM, a doyen of KANNADA Literature is worth reading:

THE RECIPE

INTO a bare handful of bones and skin/ Pour just an ounce or so of flesh and blood;/ Put in a heart love-full as sea in flood;/ Likewise a mind sea-deep and free from sin;/ Fix on two jumboo ears,…two goo goo eyes;/ Paint on a smile of babe at mother’s breast;/ Inclose a soul that caps Himavat’s crest;/ AND speech with tongue which honey’s sweet defies!

“The Stuffing?” : Goat’s milk, soya beans and dates;/ Now, cover to the brim with suff’ring human’s tears;/ And bake this dish in gaol for one score years;/ Take out and “garnish” it with pariah mates;/ Wrap up in rag, prop up with lithe bamboo;/ AND serve: The World Redeemer: Our Baapoo!
