When Matilda lost her necklace that her rich friend Mme Forestier lend her for the ball, Inorder to give her friend back the necklace Matilda and her husband brought another necklace similar to that necklace. Being in a poor household they found it very difficult to repay the debt which the necklace have brought them. After 10 years of extreme hardships and stress they were finally able to repay their debt. but this 10 year time period have banished Matilda's beauty and turned her into a strong, hard women who is no longer beautiful or young. Mme Forestier who was still looking pretty and young couldn't recognize her friend and was astonished by her friend's new condition.
