Electrolysis of pure water is very slow, and can only occur due to the self-ionization of water. Water is essentially a covalent compound. Its conductivity can be increased byadding electrolytes like acids. Acids dissociate to produce ions which inturn increase conductivity.

hope it helpz!!!
