Why diluting an acid , why is it recommended that the acid should be added to water and not water to the acid?

If you add water to acid it forms an extremely concentrated solution of acid initially. So much heat is released that the solution may boil very violently, splashing concentrated acid out of the container and all this because the reaction is exothermic. So it is always safer to add acid to water, and not water to acid.

This is because mixing an acid and water is a very exothermic reaction . It produces heat and may cause burns if not done properly. Therefore the acid is first diluted and the added very slowly to water so that there is less possibility of someone getting hurt.
