The large number of people live in the Northern plains because:

  1. These plains are flat and levelled.
  2. They provide fertile land for cultivation.
  3. These are formed by alluvial deposits brought by the rivers Indus, Brahmaputra, Ganga and their tributaries.

as a densely populated physiographic division. As per the survey the population may be around 400 million. A large number of people live in the Northern plains because of the following reasons:

a) The plains are flat and in level.

b) Fertile land is available for cultivation.

c) The plains are formed by the deposites brought by different rivers such as Brahmaputra, Indus, Ganga, and their tributaries.

d) With a rich soil cover equipped with an adequate water supply and favourable climate, it is agriculturally a productive part of India.
