Why do acids not show acidic behaviour in the absence of water ?

Answer: Water provides a medium for the dissociation of positive and negative charges of acids. In the absence of water the charges do not dissociate and hence do not show acidic behaviour. This is the reason litmus paper turns red for acids in a solution and not in its gaseous or solid state
