The high-level strategic planner needs to understand the enemy, their country and its population centers and political dynamics, and its economy and industry, which are the sources of its warmaking capacity. The planner doesn’t want or need too much detail about the battlefield(s) and the lines of communications, movement and logistics flows.

•They use a Topographic map. It isn’t just the strategists that use Topograpic maps. All branches of the military utilise them.
I won’t tell you how to read maps because frankly I’ve forgotten most of it.
