human newborn typically has anywhere between 270 to 300 "bones". I say "bones" because what appear to be bones in babies are mostly cartilage or rather soft bones. These soft bones harden and some of them fuse together as the babies grow up. Eventually, most adults end up with 206 - 207 bones in their bodies.

See

for an example -- the skull of a newborn contains of 4 plates and there are gaps between these plates. This design is what helps moms squeeze these babies out and why the newborn's heads are cone shaped for a few days after vaginal delivery. The gaps in the skull (called fontanelles) are also used by doctors and parents to find if the baby is well hydrated etc. As the baby grows older, these plates fuse and harden leading to a thick, hard skull.

Answer:

Babies have about 300 bones at birth, with cartilage between many of them. This extra flexibility helps them pass through the birth canal and also allows for rapid growth. With age, many of the bones fuse, leaving 206 bones that make up an average adult skeleton.
