Answer:

The function of esophagus is to send the food in the uni-direction from mouth to stomach. The above mechanism is known as Peristalsis, which also takes place in out intestines. Earthworm mechanism for its locomotion is also similar to this process. NO, most of the birds cannot swallow their food without gravity.

Explanation:

We know that the peristalsic movement helps the bolus of food to reach the stomach from the food pipe or oesophagus. But, in most of the birds peristalsic movement is not present because the mouth of the bird is severely different from mammals. Birds don't really chew and their oesophagus can be large in diameter as they swallow large meals.

So, birds depend on gravity to push their food through oesophagus from throat to the crop, then later propelled into stomach by waves of the peristalsis in the crop.
