however high the birds fly, if they come between the rays of the sun and have the ground/sea as a screen a shadow will be formed.

Because the light coming from the sun cant pass through them. So the area they cover doesnt gets light. And as the ground is the first solid element between them and earth, the shadow is formed on ground.
