Why do birds need to eat so much food on a daily basis?

Not all birds need to eat a great deal of food per day. It depends largely on what kind of bird it is, what kind of food they are eating, and the metabolic rate of the bird.

For example, a hummingbird is tiny, but it beats its wings at up to 200 times per second. Their hearts can beat over 1,200 times a minute. As can be imagined, they have extremely fast metabolisms. They eat high-energy plant nectar, but must almost continually eat in order to have the energy to survive. They eat a substantial portion of their weight in food each day. If you were able to move your arms that fast, you’d literally require hundreds of pounds of food per day to keep from starving to death.

On the other hand, a 5-pound chicken can get by on a few handfuls of grain per day, though grain isn’t very high-energy. They have a much slower metabolism, so they don’t need as much food.

Some birds of prey live on even less because it is higher in protein, which also takes longer to digest. A large hawk may eat a mouse or two in a day and might go a day without eating anything.

A hummingbird would starve to death in a few hours if they couldn’t eat unless the hummingbird was in a state of torpor (sort of like a temporary hibernation). And yet, each year, hummingbirds commonly migrate from the northern US to Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America. That is quite a feat for a bird that is perhaps a couple of inches long, especially one that flaps its wings so fast and which must stop frequently for food.
