Why do coal miners use battery powerred lamps rather than candles , lanterns or other types of open fires to light their way in the tunnels ?

open flame lamps could ignite flammable gases which collected in mines , causing explosions and so battery powered lamps were developed to enclose the flame and prevent it from igniting the surrounding atmosphere
