Why do concave lenses have a depression in the middle?

The lenses we draw in diagrams are pictorial representation. In reality lenses are made very thin , to avoid any spherical or chromatic aberration errors. In thin lenses you cannot feel any depression. But yes if lenses are very thick then you can feel depression by touch in case of concave or bulge in case of convex.
