dams are made with broad base to withstand the large force of dam
it is simply by looking at the formula
pressure=force/area
if the bottom is broad area is more
hence for the same force, pressure is less
hope this helps

Pressure exerted by liquid is given by formula P= hdg
Where h= depth
d= density.
g= acceleration due to gravity.
So, as depth increases, pressure exerted by liquid also increases.
As pressure increases, more pressure is exerted by the water on the walls of dam.
So, withstand that Pressure , the thickness of wall is increased and broad base is made so that area of contact increases and pressure exerted by liquid on walls of dam will be minimized.
