The saline solution can easily maintain the osmotic pressure that works between the fluids and blood cells.
Whereas if pure distilled water is used then being it hypotonic in nature will result in the rush of water in the cells in order to dilute the contents to reach the state of equilibrium which will result in bursting of the cell.
