Hey !

☆ The reason why doctors wear a white coat is actually because the profession of medicine only gained its respect and acceptability about 150 years or so ago.

☆ Before that, those working in the medical field were usually lower down the social hierarchy, since medicine was often the haphazard domain of quacks and barbers, with no regulation as to who could practice medicine. Indeed, minor surgeries were often done by barbers, along with dental extractions.

☆ This changed over time, though, and a healthy respect for the sciences extended to medicine as well, with greater regulation over practice of medicine coming about.

☆ Doctors started wearing white lab coats to signify that they were also scientists, and the white coat began instilling confidence amongst patients visiting such doctors.

☆ White coats also signified purity, and became inextricably linked to the image of scientists and doctors.

White is associated with all that is pristine, pure, honest, clean and with unimpeachable integrity. There are doctors far removed from these ideals and hopefully the white coat will remind them of these constantly unless sloth will have caused the white to become a dirty yellow or grey. Then it is anybody’s guess how its wearer would have altered. Furthermore, white induces confidence as well. Doctors today however seem to prefer coloured designer clothes which is a bit disappointing since diagnostics should not be linked to a fashion statement by the doctor. A white coat and a stethoscope are essential for any doctor who examines patients, even those who today prefer the shortcuts of looking at a CT or MRI or PET image of the patient rather than examine him.

Black has a lot of negative connotations, many of which lawyers appear to reinforce. Lawyers also must live, and Practice in order to earn a livelihood but the stories around their fee mania are legendary; the popular image is of the lawyer who starts the clock even if you have gone only to ask if he would be free to come for your daughter’s birthday. Lawyers teach us how to charge per word uttered in court even if it is to ask for an adjournment. Many refer to this as a fine Art; some call it an instance of iniquity being commercialised.
