Hey friend,
The basic earning of farmers comes from the crops they grow on their land and later sell it in the city. No land means no crops which means no livelihood. They can end up being land less if they owe someone a debt and they have to sell their land in order to pay if off. Another way a farmer can become a landless is if it is situated in the drought struck area. Lack of water or rainfall can lead to no crop growth and hence no earning. This is equivalent to losing their land.
