Why do farmers spread cetyl alcohol,to stop boiling of water,to destroy evaporation of water,to destroy marine animals or to destroy algae from water?

Cetyl alcohol is spread over lakes ponds and  fields for the purpose of stopping water to evaporate in the atmosphere. This technique is used by the farmers in areas where drought occurs and water in available in less amount for the plants in the fields.
By spreading cetyl alcohol over the water farmers stop the loss of water and conserve there supply
