Scales are like their physiological barrier, as we have skin, fishes have scales that protects them from any sort of damage. As their internals are really delicate , its protected by scales.

Moreover, these helps in determining the age too in some species. Helps fish to swim in a gliding side to side movement.

Helps them in escaping from predators.
