Hi

♡Fish use gills to breath, and gills can only bring in oxygen when moist, because the chemistry that allows blood to carry oxygen happens in water.
♡Out of water, a fish's gills dry out, and then the fish asphyxiates.
Hope it helps U

the water also acts as hydration for the fish's gills .so when out of water all the air is flowing by the gills but no water it is essentially like something is blow drying the fishes gills so the gills dry and can no longer function properly which is why they suffocate and die
