The intestines of herbivores are far longer in proportion to their body length than those of carnivores. ... Plants contain a lot of indigestible fibers, and in order to extract the nutrients, herbivores must use the bacteria that live in their gut to break down cellulose and other materials.

Herbivores eat grass which contain a very high amount of cellulose, a complex carbohydrate. Cellulose is not very easy to digest and so in order to digest it completely, herbivores have a long small intestine.
On the other hand carnivores eat meat which is comparatively a simple substance to digest..and so there small intestine is comparatively smaller than that of herbivores.
