These oppositely charged compounds are held together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction. As these forces are very strong, a considerable amount of heat energy is required to break them. Hence, ionic compound have a high melting point. ... Among the strongest intermolecular forces are ionic bonds.

Ionic compounds have high melting point because they are made up of ions which have electrical charges. Since the electrical charges attract each other, the inter-ionic bonds in Ionic compounds is very strong and it is hard to break them, resulting in high melting point.
