some strains of bacillus thuringiensis produce protien that kill the insect lepidopterans
The protein exist as inactive protoxins but when lepidopterans ingest the inactive toxin it ger activated due to the alkaline pH of the gut which solubilise the crystals.the activate toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cells and create pores that cause swelling and lysis and eventually cause death of lepidopterans
