Why do lightning conductors have spikes on them

spike is use to protect the building from lighting. It was fixed in the top of the building when the lighting strike on them the spike is connected to the ground which has copper plate to te ground

the spikes on the lightning conductor helps to  reduce the build up of charge in its surrounding.as ligjning occurs,it sucks the charge and allows to flow the metal strip so that it could reach the ground.
