due to unequal osmotic concentrations osmosis (endosmosis) occurs and because of this water gets into the fishes' body till the concentration (inside fish) becomes isotonic to that of tap water. Due to this the fishes' start to swell, a stage comes when the fishes' bodies burst and they die.
