Why do metals generally not evolve hydrogen gas with nitric acid?

Nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent. It oxidises the hydrogen produced to water and itself gets reduced to any one of the oxide ( NO2, NO,N2O ) etc...

Thus metals don't give out hydrogen when reacting with HNO3....

Thank you! Hope it helps....

Metals generally do not evolve H2 gas when reacted with nitric acid because nitric acid is an oxidising agent and it will convert the hydrogen produced to water and reduce itself to any of nitrogen oxide

But some metals like magnesium, manganese will release hydrogen gas

Hope this would help you:-}
