Why do metals have a higher density than non metals?

Metals have the ions (cations- +ve charge and electrons -ve charge) packed closely by forces of attraction. Thus the lattice structure is quite packed as shown here: You get a pretty solid structure with almost no air gaps between. Thus the high density.
