Molecules apply an attractive force between themselves. This attractive between atomic interatomic forces are of two kinds:

1. Cohesive force or power of cohesion

2. The adhesive force of adhesion.

The force of cohesive is greatest between strong atoms, less between fluid particles.

Force of adhesion is the motivation behind why water sticks to glass and gum adhere to the paper.

The additional potential energy of the fluid atoms in the unit area of the surface film is called surface energy. It is spoken to by the symbol E.
