As we climb up a mountain, the air becomes thin and thin.The fall in atmospheric pressure at higher altitude decreases the partial pressure of inspired oxygen and hence the driving pressure for gas exchange in the lungs.There is lack of oxygen also.To fulfill this need, mountaineers need to carry oxygen cylinders while climbing.
