Why do nanoparticles have different properties to microparticles in the same material?

Microparticles do not have the same properties as nanoparticles, because at the nanometer scale particles have a larger surface area, caused by the large number of atoms at the edges of the particle.

There is a transition region between nano and micro scale, called submicro, ranging from 101 nm to 999 nm. In this region changes in some properties can be observed.

At the nano scale the size strongly influences the properties of the material, a difference of 20 nm is enough to change the color of gold, for example.
