Why do number of organisms get decreased as we move from producer to consumers

I think only one number will be reduce as we move from producer to consumer because in plant through photosynthesis food is prepared and plant getting food it produce oxygen and food for every living being like that food chain is formed.Every being is consumer except plant i think so ofcourse in this way.......

I guess its because of decrease in the amount of energy that pass through each tropic level.
But while producing something they need more energy than consuming and another thing is while consuming something energy is produced .So yes even ur answer might be right
