why do p block have variable valency?​

Elements like P(Phosphorus), S(Sulphur)and other p-block elements from 3rd period onwards have variable valancy because of expanding octets. They can expand their covalency making them showing variable dominant oxidation states. (P shows +3,+5,-3,+4,+1).. Nitrogen also show different valances with Oxygen.
