Why do people resort to flattery?

Flattery is intended as praise and is meant to greatly please the person it is directed at. If the person is gullible/insecure, you can be sure that he/she will be appeased by it. It gives the person a false sense of both importance and appreciation. It is just that they can't tell the difference between flattery and a genuine compliment or they are insecure enough to accept flattery in the place of one.
