About half of adults yawn after someone else yawns due to a universal phenomenon called CONTAGIOUS YAWNING. The earlier study suggests that it is a social bonding and a sign of empathy but a new study from duke unversity suggests that contagious yawning is not strongly related to variables like empathy, tiredness,or energy levels.

Answer:

The reason that it's hard to stifle a yawn — especially when someone nearby is doing it and you're trying hard not to — appears to reside in the area of the brain that's responsible for motor function, a new study from England finds. Contagious yawning isn't unique to humans, either.
