Why do porters placethe load they have to carry on a roll of cloth rather then directly on head?

To reduce the pressure exerted on their heads , porters carry them on the cloth as pressure is inversely proportional to area. The cloth will increase the area on which the load has to be placed thus reducing the pressure.
