Why do pupils dilate in darkness?
Dilating means widening; In darkness, there is a very little light, which has to enter into our eyes for proper vision. In darkness, our pupil is dilated by the radial muscles of the iris, which is the bent extended part of the choroid layer. The purpose of dilating the pupil is to enable more amount of light to enter the eye for a distinct vision in the dark. However, vision in the dark also depends upon the presence of rod cells in retina.
Thanks!!

when it's dark, the iris widens and thepupil dilates, or gets bigger, to allow as much light as possible to enter the eye. The opposite occurs during the day. When the Sun is shining bright, the iris narrows and the pupil constricts, or gets smaller.
