Water which does not produce good lather with soap is called hard water. It is difficult to wash with soap in hard water. Water seeping through the ground becomes hard water. It is not useful for laundry and laboratory purposes.

Soap is less effective in hard water since it reacts to form a calcium or magnesium salt of the organic acid in the soap
