At this point the solid is melting to form a liquid. The particles in the liquid are the same as in the solid but they have more energy.

On heating, The kinetic energy of solids increases which makes them oscillate vigorously and hence the intermolecular forces between them is overcome and they show change in phase( like solid to liquid(melting) or solid to gas(sublimation)).
