When solids are heated, atoms takes more space for their movement and thus expands.

When solids are cooled, kinetic energy decreases, atoms take less space and thus contracts.

Things expand on heating because it start occupying much space which is called expansion.

Things contract on cooling because it start shrinking which is called contraction.
