Why do solids have high densities?

The particles in solids are closer to each other than in liquids and gasses. 

Density = mass / Volume 

Higher density means, there is more mass ( that means, more particles ) in less volume.
Solids are more dense than liquids, liquids are more dense than gasses.

Particles are closely packed.so the concentration of particles per unit volume is more. If particles are more then the mass per unit volume of the substance is also more.

Therefore density of solids is high
